Moving Tips
- Pack appropriate items only in appropriately sized boxes.
- Make sure to have all contents packed and boxed upon the arrival of the movers, it will save time, stress and money.
- Pack one room at a time, labeling each box with a description of its contents and its destination (e.g., kitchen, bedroom, bathroom). It will make unpacking that much easier.
- Double-box fragile items and add plenty of cushioning, loose items in a box have a greater chance of getting damaged.
- Do not skimp on wrapping material. Blank newsprint and bubble wrap are essential. When wrapping china and kitchen items, do not use newspaper because newspaper ink tends to bleed. Don't be tempted to cram items together—they'll "clink" and break.
- Empty all dresser drawers, night stands and desks.
- Carry all jewelry and important documents yourself.
- Use wardrobe boxes for moving clothes or wrap them with clean sheets over the hanger to protect them.
- Disconnect major appliances. Refrigerator, washer and dryer, etc. should all be disconnected, defrosted, and dried out.
- Pack all boxes TO capacity. Boxes that are under-filled are more likely to be crushed and boxes that are overfilled can tear or fall apart. Boxes should weigh about 25-30 pounds each.
